Concrete Work and Curbing

Protecting What Matters with Every Fence

Boyd Fence & Welding provides concrete work and curbing services to complement our fencing projects in Abilene, Texas. In many fence installations, quality concrete work is essential, and our crew has the expertise to handle it. We pour concrete footings for fence posts and gate posts, ensuring your fence has a solid foundation anchored in the West Texas soil. Additionally, we offer concrete curbing (also known as mow strips or ribbon curbs) along the base of fences. A concrete mow strip is a narrow strip of concrete installed directly under the fence line, running along the length of the fence. This serves multiple purposes: it creates a neat, level barrier that prevents grass and weeds from growing up under the fence, and it keeps wooden fence pickets off the ground to help prevent rot and moisture damage. Homeowners love curbing because it also makes lawn maintenance easier, you can mow right up to the edge of the fence without needing to trim grass by hand.

Our team builds these concrete curbs on-site by trenching a shallow footing under the fence line and pouring a continuous concrete base, often reinforced with rebar for stability. The result is a clean look and extended lifespan of the fence. Beyond curbing, we can also handle small concrete pads and installations related to your fencing needs, such as concrete slabs for automatic gate operator equipment, gate hinge pillars, or transitions under gates. If your project requires custom concrete work, like setting metal posts in concrete, creating short retaining curbs, or repairing an existing concrete footer, we have you covered. We ensure the entire project is done to our high standards.

Common Uses

Concrete post footings

Nearly every fence we build involves pouring concrete at the base of each post. This is fundamental concrete work to anchor fences securely in the ground. We mix and pour concrete footing for wood, chain link, ornamental, and gate posts to ensure stability.

Mow strips under wood fences

A popular request from homeowners who install new cedar privacy fences is a concrete mow strip along the bottom. This keeps the fence line neat and the wood dry. We have installed many curb strips for backyards in Abilene to help fences last longer and make lawn care easier.

Decorative concrete edging

In addition to functional mow strips, we can do decorative curbing in front yards or gardens. For example, a low concrete border around flower beds or along a driveway that ties into the fencing style. While our primary focus is fence-related, our skills crossover to any small concrete border work on landscape features.

Gate operator pads

Automatic gate openers often require a concrete pad for the post and motor to bolt onto. We pour these pads with precise dimensions, so the gate equipment is secure. We’ve made pads for slide gate tracks and for swing gate pillar hinges, making sure the heavy gate machinery is on a solid foundation.

Small slab or step installations

Sometimes a fence project will involve adding a concrete step or threshold (for example, a step over a curb, or a section of sidewalk to a new gate). We are capable of forming and pouring these small slabs as part of the overall job. By integrating this service, the customer doesn’t need a separate concrete installer for a 3×3 pad or a few steppingstones, we handle it.
